This course is typically offered via Zoom or as a live seminar, depending on the employer’s preference. So, what can you expect from this course? With over 30 years of experience, we understand the factors that contribute to collisions, drawing from our extensive road experience of over 5 million kilometers across Canada and the United States. We analyze where and under what circumstances close calls or collisions occur, providing valuable insights to enhance safety and awareness on the road.

What Do We Analyze?

Your position on the road significantly impacts the likelihood of being involved in a motor vehicle crash.

In this course, we examine various factors contributing to collisions, including:

  1. Collision Locations: Understanding where collisions occur and the positions of vehicles involved.
  2. Vehicle Positions: Analyzing how vehicle placement impacts outcomes.
  3. Weather and Road Conditions: Assessing traction issues and how they affect driving.
  4. Freeway Collisions: Evaluating conditions and identifying the key players.
  5. Rural Road Scenarios: Exploring collision risks in less populated areas.
  6. City Intersections: Analyzing left turns, right turns, and U-turns, along with the interactions of all involved parties.
  7. Lane Changes: Understanding the dynamics and risks involved.
  8. Parking Lots: Investigating common collision scenarios in parking environments.
  9. Emergency Maneuvers: Discussing strategies for sudden situations.
  10. Autonomous Vehicle Technology: Examining whether it is a friend or foe in road safety.
  11. Vulnerable Road Users: Identifying and protecting those most at risk.
  12. Low-Speed Vehicles: Understanding the nuances of vehicles not classified as Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs).
  13. Visual Acuity: Assessing the importance of good vision in driving.
  14. Fault Determination: Learning the rules for determining fault in a collision.
  15. Highway Traffic Act: Gaining a basic understanding of the Act and common violations by drivers.
  16. Legal Liability and the Law: Exploring the legal implications of driving.
  17. Licensing Standards: Reviewing the requirements for various classes of licenses.
  18. Mock Road Test: Challenging participants to see if they could pass our mock test.
  19. Emergency Braking, Steering, and Acceleration: Practicing skills in precarious conditions.
  20. Adverse Driving Conditions: Preparing for driving in rain, snow, ice, and at night.
  21. Vehicle Familiarity: Understanding your vehicle’s capabilities and limitations.
  22. Employer Safety Protocols: Discussing safety standards for your company’s sales team.
  23. Speed Management: Understanding how to maintain safe speeds under various conditions.
  24. Defensive Driving Strategies: Techniques to anticipate and react to potential hazards on the road.
  25. Space Management: Learning how to maintain safe distances between vehicles to avoid collisions.
  26. Behaviors That Affect Driving: Identifying personal habits that can impact driving performance.
  27. Attention Span: Most G drivers we tested struggled to maintain optimal attention beyond 15 minutes of heavy traffic driving.
  28. Distracted driving is a significant concern today, as many drivers struggle to keep their mobile devices out of reach while behind the wheel. Even Bluetooth conversations can be considered a form of distraction, along with eating, drinking, smoking, and zoning out. Additionally, company field drivers may legally operate two-way radios and mobile devices, access work orders on laptops, and make frequent stops for deliveries. These factors, combined with improperly secured cargo, can create unsafe driving conditions.

By analyzing these scenarios, we aim to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge to improve road safety and driving competence.

DEAN'S MESSAGE

At Dean’s Defensive Driving Training Centre we take Beginner Driver Education (BDE) very seriously. Our focus is on precision driving skills, knowledge, and behavior. On any given day we can expect 3-5 fatalities in the GTA due to a motor vehicle collision. The numbers are staggering when you consider the cost and impact of mild, moderate and serious injuries sustained to drivers, passengers and pedestrians. The rising cost of automobile liability insurance in most metropolitan areas, is resulting in motorists to pay out of their own pocket for collision damage to their vehicles. Inappropriate risk taking, reckless behaviour, impairments, lack of professional driver training, and distractions is a growing concern for all Ontario road users. I’m sure we all know someone who was injured or killed due to a driver’s negligence on the road. Experience has shown 98% of all motor vehicle collisions are avoidable even if the other driver was at-fault for a dangerous maneuver on the road.
